Catholic Voices in Spain
CV coordinators Jack Valero and Austen Ivereigh have been travelling to Valencia this year to help CV there get off the ground.
Meanwhile, the organisers of World Youth Day in Madrid invited Jack, who was born in Barcelona, to the Spanish capital in February and July to train different groups involved in the WYD communications. In August he joined the WYD Communications management team, and offered ongoing advice and guidance to young volunteers acting as church spokespeople on TV and radio during the event.
During WYD itself, three members of the original CV team -- Peter Williams, Jim Carr and Robert Colquhoun -- joined the communications team in Madrid to handle media enquiries from the English-speaking world.
Jack also appeared on a TV chat show on the Spanish Channel 4 ('La Cuatro'), to comment live on the arrival of the Pope to Spain. Because the channel is owned by the same group as the left-leaning newspaper El Pais, he was warned to expect hostility. But as he later wrote in the Catholic Herald, "what I found was friendly curiosity and respectful questions".
